The National Technology Transfer and Advancement Act of 1995 allows NASA to transfer surplus equipment to schools. Now called "Computers to Schools," the program enables the implementation of national education goals by promoting technical and scientific education activities at all levels. Since 1995, $11 million (this figure is being double checked) in equipment has been transferred to educational sites in the U.S. and Puerto Rico.
In Mississippi, the State Department of Education gives the SSC Office of External Affairs, Education Office a list of schools with high priority educational technology needs. Schools receive the surplus equipment when the computers become available. In 1995, the SSC Office of External Affairs, Education Office received NASA's Group Achievement Award for its success in implementing the Computers to Schools program.
